I’m visiting Berlin for a couple of days and I always like to contrast those cities to the one i’m living in at the moment.
Berlin seems to be heavily influenced by recent history. Which is hard not to because the wall came down only in 1989. So the whole city can be seen as an artifact of the second world war with monuments, museums all over the place. Amsterdam also has lots of history but it’s more in the past and therefore feels more like a museum and less like lot’s of recent suffering.
You feel in everything the city is ruled by its past while desperately trying to break free from it and form a new identity. From the mostly cash society stemming from a heavy bias for privacy to the building styles from a quick rebuild after the war.
