Brains are not made to grasp complex numbers. We use all kinds of shortcuts to make information easy to process in our brains. These things are commonly referred to as heuristics.
One of those heuristics is mental accounting. We give different priority to spending depending on the category and how much we are willing to spent is related to the total amount of the purchase.
Something I observe is that people go crazy over small savings. They’ll track all the latest discounts, buy everything in bulk and skip out on holidays or dinners with friends. The only problem is that the money they’ve saved is wasted on large purchases. So the 30x meals you skipped, the hours spent clipping coupons are spent on a car with just a bigger option package or a smaller house.
Safe for later. But don’t go crazy on it. Because all those dinners you are missing out on with friends might end up in buying a slight bigger car or house.
