Do you still feel edgy when you use memes? I’ve got some bad news… memes are almost old enough to drink. Our beloved Harambe died in 2016, rage comics started popping up in 2008 and Rick Rolling was popular from 2007 onwards….
Using memes still feels like you are part of a subculture. But at this moment marketing agencies hire people specifically to create memes intended to go viral. 15 years ago you would have laughed at someone when they told you they where an ‘influencer’ or ‘social media manager’ or ‘meme creator’.
The forums I used to visit have shutdown, all the persons have faded in obscurity. The people who used to cause internet riots like Jordan Petersen, Milo something something and Trump have been banned or moved on from the big platforms.
Yeah so this is a complicated way to say I’m getting old haha. Memes are dead long live the memes.
All the edgy teenagers with the memes are worrying about their pension funds now. In the end it’s just a cycle I guess, a new generation which shitpost’s on TikTok and Discord now instead of Forums. It just feels weird that something you associate with being young becomes old…
